Add or fix a shift by hand

A clock-out earlier than the clock-in counts as an overnight shift.

Your times are saved only in this browser. Nothing is sent to us. Export a CSV to keep a copy.

How to use the time clock

  1. Press Clock in when you start work. The time is taken from your device, corrected against our time server.
  2. Press Start break when you go on an unpaid break, and End break when you come back. Break time is not counted as worked time.
  3. Press Clock out at the end of the shift. The shift is added to your list with the hours worked.

The panel shows the current shift, today's total and this week's total (Monday to Sunday). Add your hourly rate to see the week's pay, with time and a half for hours over 40 if you leave that option on. You can close the page while you work: the shift keeps running and is still there when you come back on the same device and browser.

Forgot to clock in or out?

Use Add or fix a shift by hand to enter a shift with its date, start, end and break. Remove a wrong entry with the bin icon. If the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time, the shift is treated as an overnight shift.

Your data stays on your device

Shifts are saved only in your browser's storage. Nothing is sent to us, and nobody else can see your times. Clearing your browser data removes them, so download a CSV regularly if you need a record. The CSV opens in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers and includes decimal hours for payroll.

Clock in and clock out: what counts

"Clocking in" means recording the moment you start work; "clocking out" means recording when you stop. Under US federal law, non-exempt employees must be paid for all the time they work, including time before clocking in or after clocking out if the employer requires or allows that work. Working "off the clock", such as answering emails after clocking out, is still work time.

What time do I clock back in from lunch?

Add the length of your break to the time you clocked out. If you clock out for a 30-minute lunch at 11:58 AM, clock back in at 12:28 PM. For a 45-minute break starting at 12:40 PM, return at 1:25 PM. The time calculator adds any number of minutes to a time.

Rounding

Many payroll systems round punches to the nearest 5, 6 or 15 minutes. This time clock records the exact minute. If your employer rounds, the totals here may differ by a few minutes from your paystub. Our guide on how to calculate work hours explains rounding rules and the 7-minute rule.

Frequently asked questions

Is this online time clock free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit on shifts. Your times are stored only in your browser.

Can my employer see my punches?

No. Nothing is sent to a server. It is a personal record. Download the CSV or copy the table if you need to share it.

Does it work if I close the tab?

Yes. The clock-in time is saved, so when you reopen the page on the same device and browser, the shift is still running.

How is overtime calculated?

Hours over 40 in a Monday to Sunday week are shown as overtime, and with a rate entered they are paid at 1.5 times. Some states also have daily overtime rules.
