Sunrise, sunset and twilight
Sunrise and sunset are when the top of the sun touches the horizon. First light and last light are civil twilight: the sun is up to 6 degrees below the horizon and it is still light enough to see outdoors without lamps. Solar noon is when the sun is highest in the sky, which is rarely exactly 12:00.
Times are calculated for your location and are accurate to about a minute. Hills, buildings and the weather can make the sun appear a little later or disappear a little earlier.
Questions
What time does it get dark today?
It gets dark at the end of civil twilight, shown as last light, usually 25 to 35 minutes after sunset. Full darkness comes later, about 1 to 2 hours after sunset.
Why are sunrise and sunset not equally spaced around noon?
They are spaced evenly around solar noon, not 12:00. Time zones and daylight saving time move solar noon away from midday on the clock.
When is the longest day of the year?
In the northern hemisphere it is around 20 or 21 June, the June solstice. The shortest day is around 21 or 22 December.
