What is Unix time?
Unix time, or epoch time, counts the seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970. It is the same everywhere in the world at the same instant, which is why computers use it to store dates. JavaScript and many APIs use milliseconds, which is 1,000 times bigger: a 13-digit number.
Unix time ignores leap seconds, so every day is exactly 86,400 seconds.
Questions
How do I convert a Unix timestamp to a date?
Paste it into "Timestamp to date". We show it in UTC and in your time zone. If it has 13 digits, choose Milliseconds.
What is the year 2038 problem?
Systems that store Unix time as a signed 32-bit number run out of room at 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038. Modern systems use 64 bits, which lasts billions of years.
Is Unix time affected by time zones?
No. A Unix timestamp is the same instant everywhere. Only the way it is shown changes with the time zone.
