How these times are calculated

Candle lighting is 18 minutes before sunset on Friday, the most common custom. In Jerusalem it is 40 minutes before sunset. You can pick another number of minutes if your community uses a different custom.

Havdalah is shown at nightfall (tzeit hakochavim), when the sun is 8.5 degrees below the horizon and three medium stars can be seen. Some communities wait 42, 50 or 72 minutes after sunset instead; choose that option above.

Times come from the position of the sun for the chosen place and do not account for hills or tall buildings. If your synagogue publishes a calendar, follow it.

Questions

What time is candle lighting this Friday?

It is shown at the top of this page for your chosen city: by default 18 minutes before sunset, or 40 minutes in Jerusalem.

When does Shabbat end?

Shabbat ends at nightfall on Saturday, when three stars can be seen. We show this when the sun is 8.5 degrees below the horizon, usually 35 to 50 minutes after sunset.

Why is candle lighting 18 minutes before sunset?

It adds a margin so that Shabbat begins before sunset, and is the custom in most communities outside Israel. Jerusalem has a long-standing custom of 40 minutes.
